What is a Cannula?
A cannula is a thin tube made from plastic, silicone or metal that is inserted into the body, usually into a vein or artery, to administer medications, fluids, nutrients or blood products or to extract fluids such as blood, biopsy samples or fluids during medical procedures. The word 'cannula' comes from the Latin word 'canna' meaning a reed or tube.

Types of Cannulas
Cannulas are designed for different purposes and come in various sizes depending on the area of insertion and intended use. Some common types of cannulas include:

Intravenous (IV) Cannula
An IV Cannula  is the most common type inserted into a vein using a needle to administer medications and fluids intravenously. It consists of a thin flexible tube connected to tubing. Once inserted, the needle is removed leaving the soft plastic cannula in place. IV cannulas are available in various gauges depending on the vein size and fluids/medications infused.

Arterial Cannula
Similar to an IV cannula but designed for insertion into an artery to monitor blood pressure, obtain blood samples and administer medications. Arterial cannulas have special design to reduce potential complications from being inserted into an artery.

Central Venous Cannula
Larger than peripheral IV cannulas, central venous cannulas are inserted into larger central veins like the internal jugular, subclavian or femoral veins. They allow administration of nutrients, medications, IV fluids and blood products into the central circulation and circulatory system.

Nasogastric Cannula
Nasogastric cannulas are long flexible tubes inserted through the nose, down the esophagus and into the stomach. They are commonly used to drain stomach contents or deliver nutrients and medications directly into the stomach.

Chest Drainage Cannula
These cannulas are placed in the chest cavity during or after thoracic surgery to drain air, fluid or blood from the pleural space between the lungs and chest wall post thoracic surgery or trauma.
